Best Indoor Plants List & Care
House Plants and Flowers

My first indoor potted plant was a lovely boston fern. I spotted it while at the store one day and bought it because I loved the way it looked. It was so pretty, lush and full.

I took my pretty new plant home, watered it and hung it in a window. It slowly started looking worse and worse and within a month, it was dead. If it wasn't dead, it sure did look like it was! Sound familiar?

Well, that was a long time ago. I won't tell you exactly how long but since then I have worked for a number of interior landscape companies. I have learned much about indoor plant care during that time. One thing that people new to indoor plants should know is you should not buy a new indoor plant just because you like the way it looks!

Here is my list of best indoor plants. These are some of the most commonly used plants in the interior landscape industry and for good reason. They survive for a longer period of time where other indoor plants will not. Check links for more specific indoor plant care guide and tips.

Oh and by the way, those people telling you that they have plants that you can not kill? No such plant, take it from an interior landscaper, unless it is artificial!! You can give yourself an edge by providing good light for your indoor plants and learning to water your indoor plants properly!

Snake Plant Care, Sansevieria

Sansevieria, or Snake Plant, makes the list as a best houseplant. Forget to water it a few times, no problem! Place in bright light, even some morning sun, if possible. Water snake plant only after the soil has dried.

Chinese Evergreen Indoor Plant

Aglaonema or Chinese Evergreen. Most common is the "Emerald Beauty". A great low-light plant but bright light will keep it looking even better. Allow the potting mix to "dry down" about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way before you water.

Pothos houseplants care

Pothos plant is a house plant most people have owned. Use this easy indoor plant as a table, hanging or climbing plant. Place this plant in mediurm to bright light. Water when the soil has dried down about halfway.

Spider plant, a most popular house plant

Spider Plant is a really popular indoor plant. A different look and texture than many other indoor plants, these grass-like plants are pretty, compact and propagate themselves. Hang them up or set on a shelf. This easy care plant is all green or variegated. Read more on spider plant care.

Rhapis excelsa palm plant

Rhapis Excelsa or Lady Palm plant. A great looking, hardy palm that will live in low light and cool temperatures. Place in medium to bright light and water according to lighting conditions. Less prone to insect problems than many palm plants.

Philodendron Cordatum house plant

Philodendron Cordatum, also called Sweetheart Vine or Heart-Leaf Philodendron. A good indoor plant for medium to bright light. Let soil dry 3/4 of the way before watering. Use as table plant, hanging plant or climbing plant. Use "Brasil" or "Silver" for more color.

Dracaena marginata houseplants care

Dracaena Marginata is also known as the Dragon Tree. Good indoor plant for medium to bright light. Let soil dry 3/4 of the way before watering. Not recommended for low light. A beautiful and graceful houseplant.

Dracaena Warneckii plant

Dracaena Warneckii is another member of the Dracaena family and I would recommend this plant to anyone. Will do well in medium lighting. Let soil dry down 3/4 of the grow pot before watering. Only drawback is easily damaged foliage.

Dracaena Janet Craig plant

Dracaena Janet Craig is sometimes called Corn Plant. Good plant for medium to bright light but will survive in low light. Let soil dry 3/4 of the way before watering. Not as easily damaged as the Warneckii.

Bromeliad houseplants care

Bromeliads make the list, Guzmanias in particular. Most flowering house plants will not last more than a week indoors and still have nice color. Guzmania bromeliad should last a few months. Bright, indirect light is best but a medium light placement will do with less water.
