Anthurium Plant Care
Houseplants & Flowers

Anthurium is a great indoor foliage plant and flowering house plant. For the most part they are easy to care for but need more moisture and humidity than some other more common indoor house plants, like pothos or snake plant.

Anthurium Plant Leaves and Flowers

Leaves and Flowers

You can send a house plant question but before you do, please read the rest of this page and this information on watering your indoor house plants, how to help keep your indoor house plant's root system healthy and lighting for your indoor house plants. These are most important for your house plant's health and this is some of the information I will refer you to when you send an email.

Some types of the Anthuriums will be found only at a specialty plant stores, floral shops or a nursery. The Anthurium andreanum is the type you will usually find at local supermarkets, garden centers or home improvement stores.

Anthurium andreanum is a flowering variety typically used to add a touch of color. Interior landscapers use this variety most often. It is commonly used as an indoor flowering house plant. Fairly easy to keep and grow, Anthuriums do have some special requirements.

Anthurium schwezerianum, or Flamingo flower, is another flowering type you can grow in the home. However, I have seen very few of this type of anthurium as they are not often used in indoor landscapes, at least not in the United States.

Anthurium andreanum has a sturdy enlongated heart-shaped leaf. Flowering should occur from spring through late summer, with proper conditions and feeding. Anthurium Andreanum can be found with flowers in various shades of white, red and pink. Propagate by division.

Other types of Anthuriums grown more for the foliage than the flower are Anthurium Hookerii, Plowmannii, Fruffles. The Anthurium Crystallinum, Ruffles, Red bird's nest and Tweed are others grown for their foliage.

Locate your Anthurium plant in bright, indirect lighting. Temperatures should be kept between 60°F and 80°F. Humidity needs to be kept as high as possible. You can place on humidity tray, surround with constantly moist Spanish or green moss. Placing Anthurium with other plants will increase humidity levels as will placing in a naturally humid room.

How To Water

Keep Anthurium somewhat moist. May need to be watered more frequently than other plants, especially during the spring and summer. During fall and winter allow topsoil to just become dry before watering. Please see section on watering and the section on lighting for more information. Proper watering and light are essential for house plant health.

Trim the leaf margins if they become brown, following the original shape of the leaf. If you have to trim the leaves frequently, your Anthurium's humidity levels may be need to be increased. You should also review your watering habits. Keeping the planting media too wet or dry can cause browning of the leaf tips and edges. Also Anthuriums tend to collapse quickly when they become dry. That is a signal to increase your watering.

Anthuriums are prone to mite problems so also check the underside of the leaf if you are having trouble with browning leaf margins to be sure this is not the problem. Wiping the leaves and stems, front and back, with a damp sponge or cloth will keep it clean and minimize any pests. Giving the foliage a good shower will also be beneficial in removing mites and their eggs.
