Aphelandra squarrosa plant is used as both a foliage houseplant and a flowering indoor plant. Also called Zebra plant, it has large, silver-veined leaves that provide an attractive foliage display throughout the year. Additionally, for about six weeks there will be a showy flower composed of bracts.
This is a golden-yellow flower on Aphelandra squarrosa with ivory-veined foliage. Aphelandra aurantica has an orange-scarlet bloom and smaller, grey-veined leaves. Both are very attractive plants.
Aphelandra aurantica is not sold for use as a houseplant, as far as I am aware, and I have read about the plant but have only seen it once while I was visiting the Lyon Arboretum on Oahu. It had a gorgeous flower but the foliage was not as showy as the Aphelandra squarrosa.
The plant pictured here is Aphelandra squarrosa, the Aphelandra generally used as an indoor potted plant. Sometimes called Zebra plant, it has a showy, yellow bract when in bloom.

Over the years, I have had many animals and plants in the same house and have not had too many problems. I always make my best effort to keep houseplants out of the reach of pets. That can be difficult, especially with cats, as they seem to be able to get just about anywhere they please! Being an animal lover, as many people are, I thought it would be helpful to add a link for those with questions about pets and houseplants, as I have received a few emails with questions on the subject. Do not allow pets to eat your indoor houseplants or your outdoor plants. Questions about plants and pet safety?

Aphelandra plant has been a long time houseplant favorite but is not always easy to keep under normal household conditions. Called Zebra plant because of the prominent stripes on the foliage, Aphelandra requires a bright light situation. Bright, indirect, filtered light is preferable. Morning sun is tolerated but keep out of very hot sunny locations.
When watering Aphelandra do not keep excessively wet. Potting media should be moist but not soggy. Allow Aphelandra to dry about one quarter of the way down from the top and it should do well. Please see sections on watering and lighting for house palnt for more on the most important parts of your houseplant care.
Other Care Information - To avoid problems with your Aphelandra plant, never let the soil dry completely, keep the plant out of cold drafts and do not place in hot, sunny locations. Aphelandra should be kept in average temperatures, 60 - 80 degrees F.
Aphelandra plant often become leggy and leafless when kept in the home under less than optimal conditions. You may be able to avoid this by keeping them in bright light, do not allow the soil to dry out completely, feed when plant is in growth period, provide additional humidity, and keep from cold temperatures in winter.
Cutting back stems as they become leggy and pinching out new growth tips occasionally can help keep your Aphelandra plant full. As with most plants, the water required will be less in the winter. Please be sure to check out the sections on watering your indoor plants and lighting for your indoor house plants.
Extra humidity is needed for Aphelandra plant. You can increase humidity by using a humidity tray. Place your Aphelandra plant in a shallow tray filled with water and pebbles to keep the pot out of the water. As this water evaporates it will provide extra humidity. Grouping with other plants will also raise the humidity levels as will placing in a room that naturally has more moisture, like the bathroom, kitchen or some type of closed container or terrarium.
