Guzmania Bromeliad Plant Care
Indoor House Plants

Bromeliads are indoor flowering house plants that can add great color and contrast to your indoor garden. A few of the most popular bromeliads are the Aechmea fasciata, Neoregelia, and the Guzmania bromeliad. The Guzmania bromeliad is sold in most places that sell flowers or plants.

Plant Care Guzmania Bromeliad

Bromeliads are easy to care for indoor, house plants. A colorful, long lasting bloom and ease of care got them a spot on the list of best house plants. Guzmania is the most popular because they are available in many colors. Guzmania bromeliads are also the bromeliad that you will easily find at many stores.

Guzmania is one of the easiest bromeliad plants to care for and is easy to find at most stores that carry plants. It is available in many colors, yellow, purple, orange and red, and many variations of those. Neoregelia bromeliads are generally much shorter, having a less showy flower but often more interesting foliage.

If you can find them in stores, Aechmea bromeliads, Fasciata or Primera, are going to have pink blooms with slight variations. Another type of bromeliad that I really like is the Vriesea, as the "flower" is usually quite interesting. They are available in a few different colors. Vriesea tend to be a little more difficult and not as long lasting as Guzmania when using as an indoor plant for home or office.

Guzmania Bromeliad Houseplant Care Question?

Guzmania Bromeliad house plant care questions? You can send a houseplant care question but before you do, please read this information on watering your indoor house plants, how to help keep your indoor house plant's root system healthy, lighting for your indoor house plants, and basic houseplant care. These are most important for your indoor house plant's health and this is some of the information I will refer you to if you send an email.

Interior landscapers use these plants as a way to add contrast, color and texture to an interior design. Their secret to keeping them looking great, other than proper watering and good lighting, is that they are replaced on a regular basis, usually every 8 to 12 weeks. This depends somewhat on the bromeliad variety and the bloom stage when installed.

Bright light is essential for keeping the plant and the bloom looking good for a long period of time. Bromeliads will decline quickly in very low light. Bromeliads will do well with bright, diffused natural lighting or any type of full spectrum artificial lighting. Bromeliads are great for adding color accents to professional office space as they do well under the artificial light.

How To Water

In medium to low light allow the growing media to just dry out between waterings. Bromeliads have a minimal root system so don't over water. A bromeliad in a higher light placement should be allowed to dry down at least one half the depth of the grow pot and then it should be watered thoroughly. Discard excess water.

Other Care Tips

Once mature and in bloom, these plants will begin to fade and die after a certain amount of time. This really depends on the care they receive, the light and how far into their bloom stage they were when they were acquired. If you have a bromeliad, don't be upset if it starts to die after you have had it for awhile. This is natural. I have had some stay in good bloom for 6 months, although this is unusual, and most only last 2-3 months with a good looking flower.

Other Notes on Bromeliads - Watering in the "vase" of the plant is alright in good, bright light situations. However, if the lighting is not great, this may not be the best thing to do. Problems with gnats, mosquitoes and rot can occur. In nature, rain falls into the center of the plant, remaining there until it evaporates. Insects and organic matter fall in and are trapped in the vase. As they decompose, the plant is fed through the foliage. This process will most likely not be occurring in your home!

Bromeliads should be acquired with an established bloom as they really require a greenhouse environment to reach this stage. If you have a sun room or a greenhouse you can have fun with these tropical plants.

Once the bloom on your bromeliad has lost its color, you can just cut it back, leaving the foliage intact. This will allow the shoots at the base of your bromeliad to continue to grow. You can leave your Guzmania bromeliad as it is and allow it to continue growing or you can remove the "pups" or shoots that grow from the base of the plant and start some new plants.

Bromeliads can be propagated by removing and planting the "pups" or shoots that grow from the base of a mature specimen. Make sure to plant them into small pots that fit the size of the bromeliad shoots. However, you must be patient as it generally takes about one and a half to two years for these plants to reach maturity and produce a bloom. Hope this has been helpful to you as you care for your indoor Guzmania bromeliad plants and flowers! More house plant and flower pictures, contact, and care information below...
