Working in the interior landscape industry, I get a lot of questions from customers about their personal houseplants. It is nice to be able to help them keep their indoor house plants growing and healthy. That is why I started this website, to help others with their house plant and flower care.
Just like anything else, you can learn to care for your indoor plants. Indoor plant care is easier than you might think, once you get the hang of it. I will start from the beginning, that is choosing an indoor plant to bring home.
It is easy to be captivated by all of the wonderfully beautiful indoor plants in the greenhouse or plant section of your local home improvement store or nursery. However, if you are picking out your first indoor plant, try to stick to the more common house plants. Some good plants to start with are Sansevieria plant, Pothos plant, a Chinese Evergreen plant (Aglaonema) or even a Spider Plant. These are easy care, indoor plants and will forgive a few mistakes on your part.
To start, here is a list of some indoor plants that are easy care and suitable for most home or office environments.
After deciding which plant you would like to add to your home, head out to the nursery, greenhouse or home improvement store. Choosing a plant that is in good health is fairly easy. Look for leaves, foliage that are the correct color for the plant you have chosen. Avoid any plant with yellow, brown, faded leaves or black or brown spots on foliage. The color of a plant can be a clue about other potential problems you may not notice at first glance, root and insect problems.
If possible, knock the pot off of the root ball and check that your indoor plant choice has a well developed, healthy root system, not just a few small roots. Roots should be firm and healthy looking, not black, soft or mushy.
Hi Plant and Flower People!
I started this website in 2012 while helping my younger brother through a fight with terminal cancer. Between shopping, cleaning, cooking, laundry, doctor/hospital visits, and other tasks to help him, I taught myself HTML/CSS and other skills used in creating a website. My brother had a very successful stock photography website himself and his advice to me was to make a website about something you know.
I had left a job in the interior landscape industry in 2012 (I have worked in the interior landscape industry since 1986) to go across the country to help him out. So that became the subject of this website, indoor house plant and flower care.
It costs money for hosting service, domain fees, etc. to keep websites running. That is why I have third party ads/Amazon products and other affiliate links on webpages. Please use them if they are helpful to you as I earn commissions/ad revenue through them and they help pay costs for hosting, domain name, etc.

After you pick your new plant, it's time to take your new plant home. Hopefully you already have a good location with great light picked out for your new indoor plant. So, take it home and place in a good light situation. It shouldn't hurt to give it a good watering when you first get it home.
Please do avoid the temptation to buy an extra large pot, soil and plant food and then take your new plant home, pot it up and fertilize it. Do not re-pot your new indoor plant and do not fertilize. Just place in good light, water it and give it time to adjust to its new home.
Keep in mind that variegated indoor plants need more light than those with less variegation. Typically, the lighter the color of a plant, the higher the light levels it needs to maintain its color and variegation.
Temperatures for most indoor plants should be at a minimum of 60°F. Indoors plants can be easily damaged by hot or cold drafts and extreme temperatures. Keep away from hot or cold spots and in the winter time move away from cold window panes.
Place your indoor plant in any bright, shaded location. Full sun, especially through glass, can burn the exposed leaves. Some indoor plants will survive in medium to low light but for a really nice looking plant, provide bright, diffused natural light.

If you put your indoor plant in high light, you can allow the potting mix to dry down approximately 1/2 to 3/4 of the way before watering thoroughly. In a lower light situation, allow soil to dry between watering. Please read the section on watering indoor plants and lighting for indoor plants, the most important parts of your indoor plant care. Remember that indoor plants in very low light will not do well as light is an essential factor in plant health and growth.
Mealy bugs are one of the most common insect problems that you will have with your indoor plants. An oval shaped, somewhat flattened body and six legs distinguish this insect, although they can appear to have more legs because of their "antennae" and "tails". They also have a fringe around the body. A waxy, protective substance covers the body of adults and egg sacs giving them a cottony appearance. Here is a picture of mealy bugs, up close, to help you identify them.
Normally mealy bugs are found in hidden areas so be sure to check undersides of the leaves and leaf axils. Mealy bugs and scale insects excrete a sticky substance called honeydew so if your plant feels sticky, suspect mealy bugs or possibly scale insects. Keep an eye out for these pest, especially when you first bring a new plant home.

Quarantine new additions to your plant family for at least two weeks. You want to be sure your plant is pest free before placing with any other house plants. The incubation period for many houseplant insects is 7-10 days. Anything you might have missed should show up within the first few weeks after you bring your new indoor plant home.
Washing with a spray mixture of mild liquid dish soap and water is also helpful in keeping any pest problems in check. Treat until run off, let dry then apply the second wash. You must be sure to hit the undersides of the leaves and the stems also. Twice a week for two weeks and your plant should be safe but doing this monthly or weekly can be beneficial for your indoor plants.
Never apply anything onto your plants leaves with the plant in the sun or when the soil is dry. Move out of the sun and water first.
