Also called Scindapsus aureus or Epipremnum aureum, they are known in some places as Devil's Ivy and Money Plant. Pothos Marble Queen | House Plant Care

Pothos Marble Queen Plant

Pothos "Marble Queen" is one of the most common varieties of Pothos houseplant. It has a glossy green leaf "painted" with white. It should stay that way in bright light but if kept in lower light it may start to lose some of the white in the leaf and show more of the green. Lower light will also mean less frequent watering of indoor houseplants.

Other common Pothos plants are the "Golden" Pothos, which is a green leaf marbled with yellow, the all green "Jade" Pothos, and the Pothos "Neon" which is a neon green color.

Pothos plants are a tropical plant often used in interior landscaping. They are easy to grow and are easily used in a mass planting or as a type of ground cover under larger plants. Pothos can be used as a table top plant, a hanging plant, and they are also grown on a pole or trellis for use as a more upright plant.

I have grown Pothos plants in rooms lit by the afternoon sun and had good results. This Pothos had very large leaves, some about 10 inches across, and great variegation, but the water usage goes way up. They will wilt and scorch if let to dry in a sunny spot so indirect light is the best bet.

Pothos plants will produce aerial roots if kept in optimum conditions and will attach themselves to wood, brick or your walls if they get a chance. Pothos is a good plant to use if you want a "climbing" plant. Very often they are used in hanging containers and allowed to trail over the edge, which makes a great way to display a Pothos "Marble Queen".

How to Water

From spring through summer, water pothos after the topsoil has dried out. Let dry almost completely fall through winter. There are a few things to consider before you decide to water any indoor house plant so please read the sections on watering your potted plants and lighting for your houseplants for more information and for better plant health.

Other Pothos Plant Care Tips

Temperatures for Pothos plants should be kept between 60 - 85 degrees Fahrenheit. A bright, indirectly lit spot is ideal. If your Pothos plant is variegated, the variegation may tend to fade in lower light.

As the vines get longer, lift the longest and cut back almost to the soil, just above a leaf node. This will promote new runners and will help keep your pothos plant from becoming too leggy or sparse. Pinching out new growth tips will also help induce fuller growth.

Mealy bugs are one of the most common insect problems that you will have with Pothos plant. Keep a watchful eye out for this pest, especially when you first bring your new pothos plant home. An oval shaped, somewhat flattened body and six legs distinguish this insect, although they can appear to have more legs because of their "antennae" and "tails". Here is a picture of mealybugs, if you are wondering what they look like...

A waxy, protective substance covers the body of adult mealybugs and egg sacs giving them a cottony appearance. Normally found in hidden areas, mealybugs can be hard to detect at first. Check the undersides of the leaves and in leaf axils. If your pothos plant feels sticky, mealybugs may be the cause. They excrete a sticky substance called honeydew. The color of mealybugs will be white or gray.

Isolate new additions to your houseplant family for a week or two. This will give any disease or insects problems you may not have noticed time to appear so you can address it. And you will be protecting existing members of your house plant family from infection.

It is a good idea to quarantine any recent additions to your indoor plant family for a few weeks just to be sure there are not any insects, or diseases, that were not noticed at first. Wash down your new indoor house plant with a mixture of water and mild dish detergent. I like to add a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil or Orange essential oil to my house plant cleaning solution.

Apply to top and lower leaf and stem surfaces of your house plants, being careful not to saturate the soil. You can clean by hand or use a spray bottle to apply your house plant cleaning solution. I use a sponge moistened with my cleaning solution to gently wipe the top and lower leaf surfaces. Cleaning of your house plants should be a regular part of your house plant care. Never apply anything to your house plant's foliage until it has been watered and moved out of any direct sun.
